Synaptic Disturbance was formed by Dan Upton for the RPM Challenge in January 2009. The initial intent was to channel his progressive- and post-rock and -metal, industrial, and electronic influences into something new. 2009's Aplysia Californica was the result, an exploration of influences and an experiment in home recording completely written and recorded in February 2009.
2010 brought about They Are Killers, mostly written over the latter half of 2009 and recorded in February 2010. The album was intended to be a concept album about assassins, but with no lyrics ever written the end result is an instrumental album with plenty of space for the riffs to get stuck in your head.
